應金屬所邀請，2008年李薰材料科學講座系列研究獎獲得者、美國加洲大學圣迭戈分校材料學系教授Marc A. Meyers教授于11月18日-12月6日來所講學并開展合作研究。
來訪期間，Meyers教授為金屬所研究生和科研人員作了題目為“Mechanical Behavior of Materials”的系列講座。Meyers教授認為此次系列講座對他是一次非常愉快和具有挑戰(zhàn)性的經(jīng)歷，這是他第一次使用由他本人和K. K. Chawla博士編寫的《Mechanical Behavior of Materials》（再版）一書上課，并且學生母語為非英語。通過17天36個學時的系列講座和課下討論，有18人通過了課程考試（共有21人參加考試）2人取得滿分，教學取得了圓滿成功。Meyers教授在所期間還與該所材料疲勞與斷裂研究部、非平衡金屬材料研究部和研究生進行了深入交流和研討，金屬所近期的研究成果，優(yōu)秀的科研人員、研究生隊伍及精良的裝備給Meyers教授留下了深刻的印象。他在留言中對金屬所給予了很高的評價：IMR is undoubtedly one of the best equipped research lab, in materials that I have visited. The combination of human resource and talents, equipment, and infrastructures make this graduate school unique. Its reputation already high, will only continue to grow, since there is great consciousness of the importance of publishing in tope global journals. Marc A. Meyers教授1971年畢業(yè)于美國Denver大學并獲得博士學位；1983-1988年作為美國新墨西哥州爆炸技術中心創(chuàng)建人之一，任副主任；1985-1987年任美國軍隊研究辦公室材料科學部主任顧問；1992-1997年任美國力學與材料研究所副所長。Meyers教授曾多次參與主持大型國際專業(yè)會議，任主席、副主席，發(fā)表專著3部（1.《Mechancial Metallurgy: Principles and Applications》，M.A.Meyers and K.K.Chawle，(authors) 1984；2.《Mechanical Behavior of Materisl》，M.A.Meyers and K.K.Chawla，(authors)1999；3.《Mechanics and Materiaisl: Foundamentals and Linkages》，M.A.Meyers， R.W.Armstrong and H.O.K.Kirchner，(editors)1999。），合署著作7部，發(fā)表學術論文300余篇，并榮獲美國ASM會員（Fellow）、德國Humboldt Award和美國TMS杰出科學家/工程師獎等榮譽。（金屬所供稿）
